ET Etiopia - 12.11.11
David K3LP, Paul N6PSE, Al K3VN and Bill N2WB will be active from Ethiopia until 13 December [425DXN 1071]. The goal of the trip are to administer US FCC Amateur Radio License examinations for 58 students at the Institute of Technology of the University of Addis Ababa, to create the University of Addis Ababa - Technology Incubation Program (TIP), to install antennas for the low bands (160 and 80m) at the University and to be active as ET3AA and ET3SID on 160-6 metres using CW and SSB. The team will operate from Sid May's QTH using ET3SID, and from the university using ET3AA. QSL for both callsigns via N2OO - he will only have the logs for contacts made by ET3AA and ET3SID on 8-13 December 2011. See http://www.k3lp.com/et3aa_december_2011.htm for additional information and updates.

K - USA - 12.13.11
Hello to all the FFMA types out there and to anyone chasing 6M grids....
The K5N Grid Activation Group is working hard towards our Winter DXpedition. We will be going to the grid line between DL99 and DM90.
We will leave on Dec 26th and drive to our operating location just south of Rocksprings, TX. A local ham, Alex Dula-KE5PWJ has helped us a lot by scouting out a good location and gaining permission from the landowner for us to be there. Thanks very much Alex!!
We will drive to Rocksprings on Monday, Dec 26th. It is about a 9 hour drive from where I live in East TX, so we are not planning to try and setup on Monday. It will be dark or almost dark when we get to Rocksprings. We plan to stay in a motel Monday night and setup on Tuesday morning, Dec 27th. We should be running easily before noon. We plan to have Internet while we are there, so we will announce ourselves on PingJockey when we get up and running. We will operate until 8AM on Friday, Dec 30th and then we will tear down and begin the drive home.
There will only be 3 operators, Bill-N5YA, George-NR5M, and me-K5QE. Because of that, we may not operate in the very late hours every night UNLESS we are still making a lot of contacts via meteor scatter. WE will need to get some sleep in there somewhere. The two operators not "on duty" will be able to go back to the motel and sleep at night, so that will help to keep us from being so tired that we cannot see straight. We will try to let everyone know via PingJockey what is going on.
The station will be a TV van with the Wil-Burt pneumatic mast. We will probably only put the mast up about 20ft. Antenna will be 2 x 6M5X with full AZ / EL rotation. The rig will be a Pro2 with two of the M2 6M-1000 amplifiers. We have a drive splitter and output combiner that works really nicely. On the bench when I was testing, I was able to get a nice cool 1800W out of the two amps. With just a bit of drive reduction, I can get 1500W output. This should be a killer combination
with the fully steerable antenna. We will be operating on 50.215MHz for ALL modes. This will allow us to quickly change from MS to Es if we hear some SSB coming through AND it will avoid the crystal controlled stations of the Alabama Sideband net.
Now, what kind of propagation should we expect?? That is a big question. The week between Christmas and New Year's is supposed to be the peak of the Winter Es season, so we may get some Es to various lucky spots in the country. I am planning to run some EME when the moon is in a favorable position. When we are trying EME, we will be on the ON4KST EME/JT65/CW Chat pages. The rest of the time, we will be running digital MS with FSK441 or ISCAT and using PingJockey. We certainly do want to work everyone possible. If we are successful with this operation, then we will be pretty sure that the trip to DL88 next year will go off well. We are also planning an operation to the DL79-DL89 line next summer. That will mean that the K5N Grid Activation Group will have activated all of the Big Bend grids for several days each with QRO power and good antenna systems. We are really hoping that we can move all these "rare" grids down the needed list quite a bit.
Speaking of the Internet, we plan to "tether" our PC with the iPhone for our Internet. AT&T claims that they have full coverage at full speed where we are going. We are going to try the "tethering" before we go. Hopefully, we will be able to make it work OK. If we get in trouble there, we may have to ask for help. Using a 3G or 4G phone for Internet means that things will not be very fast, but we will just have to do what we can. If there is anyone that is very familiar with doing this, please contact me off the reflectors. I would like to learn as much as I can before we actually try it.
Our QSL Manager, as usual, is Joey-W5TFW. Please send your QSL cards to him WITH SASE. No SASE ====> No QSL card. Please do NOT send QSL cards to the traveling members as we will not have any blank cards to send out. Also, it will take us a couple of weeks to get the cards designed and printed up, so be patient. I want to give a special "Thank You" to Joey and JD for all the work that they put in on these projects--Joey with the QSL chores and JD with the web pages and QSL design.
Please mark your calendars and look for us Dec 27th thru 8AM on Dec 30th. We do want to work you if possible. Thanks....
Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to everyone. This is your official K5N "just after Christmas" present. Enjoy.....

Mar. Mob. - Maritime Mobile - 12.11.11
From Jim Clary – ND9M I just got back to my ship at Diego Garcia (VQ9 in grid MI62). Currently underway from DGar to the Maldives (8Q)- grid MJ64 - running a 6M CW beacon - on 50.105 while underway - just callsign and grid square. When I’m able - I’ll change it to a CQ wheel - mainly be in the 0300Z-1600Z time frame. I don’t have a recip license or permit for operating from the Maldives, so I’ll be QRT inside their territorial waters for the two or three days. Rig is FT857 with dipole about 100 feet above the water line. Full 100W when possible. Once I get back to the island in a couple weeks, I’ll be putting up a 5-element beam and expect to be QRV from VQ9 in the 1200-1630Z time frame which are my local evening hours that I’m usually ashore.
