K - U.S.A. 5.18.11

Hello to all....here is our "latest and greatest" announcement from K5N.

The K5N Activation group wishes to make the following announcement. Please feel free to forward this to anyone that you think might be interested.  Thanks....the K5N Activation Group.

As you may know, the Mississippi River is currently undergoing "The Great Flood of 2011".  River heights are at record levels.  The peak of the flood will fall during the time that we had planned to be at EL58--or very close.  The team does not believe that traveling the river will be safe.  In addition, the island where we must setup may quite possibly be under water.  Burwood Island was only about 2 ft above the Gulf of Mexico when we were there in 2009.  Current river heights are running 3 ft above normal and rising.  None of us are prepared for a Scarborough Reef type expedition.

Hence, we are moving our DXpedition dates.  Here is the latest plan:

June 29th    Team arrives in Venice, LA
June 30th    Load the boats and leave for EL58.  We should be operational by 1PM or so
July 1-3      Operate from EL58
July 4th       Operate until 9AM.  Then the team will pack out and leave the island.

For all  the details, please check out our new EL58 web page which may be accessed from the Grid Bandits home page (http://www.kcvhfgridbandits.com/) by clicking the DXpeditions button at the lower right.  Or, just go to http://kcvhfgridbandits.com/kc_vhf_grid_bandits_044.htm.  Also, please note the addition of Russ-KB8U of CM79 fame.

All email concerning this event should be addressed to Questo indirizzo e-mail è protetto dallo spam bot, abilitare Javascript per vederlo , NOT to our personal email addresses.

Team K5N wishes to apologize for having to change our plans again, but we believe that fighting the Mississippi River is probably a seriously losing proposition.  We believe that the water will be down to manageable levels by June 30th.

We hope to work everyone possible, so listen up for us.  Thank you.

73 de N5OMG, KE5KDM, WN2E, N5YA, K5QE, KB8U, K5YG, W5TFW and N0IRS - A Grid Bandits DXpedition

Please understand that none of us wanted this change.  It was forced upon us by Mother Nature.  Getting agreement on these dates for all these people is hard enough--vacations have to be juggled, etc.  We are doing the best that we can....

K - U.S.A. 5.22.11

For the past 2 days I have been helping Pat-WX7M get his 6M
KW Rover ready to roll.
Brand new Dodge Ram with a 50 ft telescoping mil surplus tower mounted in the bed that's raised using a 12V winch.
Also mounted in the bed on a wooden deck are a 4KW 220V AC Generator and a IC-PW1 KW amplifier/IC706mkIIg body in a custom made aluminum transit case with 6 muffin fans to keep it cool.
The M2 5 ele 6M yagi rides down the road as one piece on a aluminum cradle mounted on the Passenger side of the vehicle.
When stopped its a simple matter to stand on the wooden deck mounted above the roof and install the yagi atop the safety wired Create RC-5 rotor.
While mobile it will be possible to operate on 80-10M HF using one of the monoband hamsticks that ride in a tube mounted on the ladder rack. 6M Mobile operation will utilize one of KB6KQ's latest style 6M loops.
The radio and amplifier are used via remotely mounted control heads in the cab of the truck.
Over a 5 day period the route will take me from Fallon NV to the AZ/CA border and then up thru central UT to NE NV and finally back home to Fallon NV.
Grids traversed in sequence are... DM09, DM08, DM18, DM07, DM17, DM16, DM26, DM25, DM24, DM23, DM35, DM36, DM37, DM38, DM39, DM29, DN20, DN21, DN11, DN10, DN00, and back to home to DM09.
Planned stops (KW W/5ele yagi at 25') are only in the following grids... DM17,DM25, DM23, DM36, DM38, DM39, DM29, & DN20. The rest will be worked while mobile in route with the KQ loop.
Modes will be CW, SSB, & either 441A or JT65B (when stopped).
When you hear me please post that info so others can get into the log as well.
Day 1 - Stops in DM17 - Mobile only in 08, 18, 16, & 26.
Day 2 - Stops in DM25 & 23 - Mobile only in 24, 26.
Day 3 - Stops in DM36 & 38 - Mobile only 26, 37.
Day 4 - Stops in DM39 & 29 - Mobile only in 28, 29.
Day 5 - Stops in DN20 & 00 - Mobile only in DN21, 11, 10, & DM09.
Minor details left to finish up then on the road we go.
Departure possibly as early Weds May 25th 2011. Look to the
various reflectors for updates...

A later announcement will be made in regards to on line logs. The operation will be from a rented house and will be our normal six meter set up with a good antenna and power." 73 and see you on six Ed W0SD.

VE - Canada - 5.18.11

VUCC grid hunters who need Canadian grid EO40 may want to listen for WB8BZK/VE3 who will activate EO40ud from Seseganaga Lake in Ontario between May 28 and June 3.

Looking forward to a few band openings or maybe some aurora action. I am willing to make a few 1230Z SSB Meteor Scatter Sequence skeds.
I will QSL to all who need the grid.  Send SASE to WB8BZK address on QRZ.com

VP9 - Bermuda - 5.19.11

Doug, KF4VTT will be visiting Bermuda from June 10 – 17, 2011 and staying at the QTH of VP9GE.

Although this is not a true DXpedition, Doug will utilize 160M-6M on SSB, CW, RTTY and possibly PSK31 when time permits. His XYL and son will be accompanying him, so Doug will need to be fair about the amount of time spent on the air.
As a personal goal, he hopes to finish DXCC and VUCC from VP9. Any help with this endeavour would be appreciated. Doug also hopes to be active on 6 Meters during the ARRL June VHF QSO Party on June 11-13.
QSL via KF4VTT by Bureau, direct or LoTW.
